Shin Chan - An Action Bastard Hero

The popular series Shin Chan, known as Crayon Shin-Chan from Japan is written by animator and manga writer Yoshito Usui , who sadly passed away on Sept 11, 2009. With his death writing for both the show and manga stopped. Thankfully, there is talk of revival in Japan from animators that worked alongside Mr. Usui. If interest continues I am sure we are to see this wily hooligan again.

"Black and blue, but there they are, one and two"

The closest live-action similarity I can personally make in comparison to Shin Chan is the American early 90's show, Seinfield. However, instead of an adult only cast this series mainly focuses on the daily life of 5-year old Shinnosuke "Shin" Nohara and his family, with occasional segments devoted to the parents or his fellow school-children. Many of the jokes derive from current affairs and are deemed inappropriate by Japanese social standards thus misunderstood often, despite many of them to be based on common truths. Purposefully that is the appeal, just like Seinfield bringing our daily mundane happenings to the table with hilarious insight, providing something everyone can relate to. Not to mention Shin's constant out of this world antics combined with his shenanigans with friends bring back nostalgic memories from our childhoods. Many of the schemes played out by Shin on the show are some of the very same things I lead or participated in myself when I was a child. While relating these 20+ year memories to the show, is when I find it the most enjoyable.

Luckily enough, the show in it's entirety can be found in a wide array of medias. From free online streaming on popular websites such as Adultswim.com and Netflix.com to DVDs at your local walmart or available through iTunes to download (or other torrent ready programs and sites such as thepiratebay.org ) What is fact and important, is that you begin watching the show immediately. If possible buy it on DVD in support.
